Appointment of Professor Dr. Anwar Hossain as the Vice-Chancellor of Northern University Bangladesh by the President of People's Republic of Bangladesh and Chancellor of NUB President Md. Abdul Hamid
Professor Dr. Anwar Hossain has been in teaching profession for the last forty five years and is widely respected as a teacher, researcher and administrator.
He did his B.A.Honours and Masters in Sociology from Dhaka University in 1967 and 1968 respectively and stood first in first class. Then he joined the Business School in Bloomington Campus of Indiana University as a graduate student in September 1969 under a scholarship program of Ford Foundation. He earned his MBA degree majoring in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from the School of Business of Indiana University USA in August 1971.
On his return to Dhaka Bangladesh he joined the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) under Dhaka University, the most prestigious business school in Bangladesh in February 1972 as an Assistant Professor. Later on he earned his doctoral degree from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Belgrade in February 1983. He served in IBA Dhaka University for a long period and became a professor in February 1991. He also served as the Director of IBA from April 2001 to January 2003. Before that he was appointed by the government as the treasurer of Bangladesh Open University, a specialized distance university, in January 1996 for a period of four years. He also served as the provost of Surjo Sen Hall of Dhaka University for a period of three years.
Dr. Hossain has a total of 45 research papers published in national and international journals and has several books to his credit. He served as the Dean of the Business faculty of the American international University of Bangladesh starting from 2003 and as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of American International University –Bangladesh from February 2008 to June 2011. He was also the acting Vice Chancellor of Presidency University, Dhaka, from June 2011 to February 2012. On February 23, 2012 he joined the southeast University as the Vice Chancellor for a term of four years. He joined as Vice-Chancellor at Northern University Bangladesh on 15 November 2016.
While in IBA Dr. Hossain edited the institutional journal entitled “Journal of Business Administration” for a period of ten years. He also served as the Associate Editor of the “AIUB Journal of Business & Economics” regularly published since 2003. He engaged in research works quite extensively throughout his entire teaching career and published several research papers and books at home and abroad. His research interest includes organizational culture, job satisfaction, leadership and entrepreneurship development as well as human resources. About a dozen students earned their M.Phil and doctoral degree under his supervision.
He was also involved in training and consultancy works for the World Bank, UNDP, UNFPA, GTZ, UNESCO and top corporate houses in Bangladesh.
Dr.Hossain developed and launched the first BBA program in Bangladesh at IBA in 1987, which became a very popular program in the country. Dr.Anwar has travelled widely in about 30 countries around the world and participated in several international seminar, workshops and conferences as paper presenter, keynote speaker and special guests. He also served as the Director of AMDISA (2001-2003) a leading association of management development institutions in the SAARC region based in Hyderabad, India. On August 7, 2016 he was awarded with teaching excellence award by CMO Asia in Singapore. He received the award of “Distinguished Teacher” from Chennai-based Global Institute of Management in February 2017.
