Seminar on “Combating Cruel Trade of Begging in Bangladesh” held at NUB

Centre for General Education of Northern University Bangladesh arranged a seminar on “Combating Cruel Trade of Begging in Bangladesh” on 04th December 2016 at NUB Banani Campus. Professor Dr. Anwar  Hossain, Honorable Vice-Chancellor of NUB had graced the program as Chief Guest and Md. Anwar Hussain, Treasure , NUB was present as the special guest while Abdus Shahid Mahmood, Director of Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF) was present as discussant. Md. Abdullah-Al-Helal, Assistant Professor of NUB presented the paper.

 

The main aim of this seminar was to raise consciousness among people against beggars mafia who abduct the children, make them disabled and force to beg. Md. Abdullah-Al-Helal presented in his paper that there are nearly 70,000 beggars are living in Dhaka city among them a great number of beggars were abducted and maimed when they were very young.

 

Abdus Shahid Mahmood, Direntor of BSAF commented in his speech that information are available regarding these vested syndicates in the print and electronic media who are doing this cruel business in the name of begging. But if we want to prevent these beggars mafia at the very beginning a survey should be conducted in order to know the number of genuine beggars in Bangladesh. He also suggested that both government and non government should emphasize on poverty alleviation and media should play a positive role to prevent force begging.

 

Chief guest Prof. Dr. Anwar Hossain said that children are innocent. So those are doing business by kidnapping the children, they must be punished by the existing laws.

 

Professor Dr. Kazi Shahdat Kabir, Head, Department of Governance and Public Policy of NUB was present in this seminar as moderator. Faculty members of NUB, officers and students were also present in this program among others.
